However, you might find yourself easily overwhelmed when faced with so many antiques. How do you know what will be valuable to you and what won’t be? To make your antique search easier, here are a few things to look for in antiques:
- Amount of wear and tear: Anything you find at an antique store will likely have some signs of old age and wear and tear. After all, that’s what makes these items antiques. Still, you should consider the amount of wear and tear and decide whether or not that amount is reasonable. Maybe you dislike finding sticky drawers. Or perhaps you don’t have time to fix a long crack in the furniture. You’re not always going to find a flawless antique, but you might find some to be in better shape than others.
- Check for provenance: If you think that a particular antique item might have some considerable value, check for provenance. An antique’s provenance will inform you about its history of ownership and any additional documentation.
- Determine your use: Think about why you want an antique piece. Where are you going to put it? How are you going to use it? It can be easy to want to purchase everything you see, especially if it’s for a good price. However, you’re likely to love your antiques more if you already have a purpose in mind.
