If you’re new to antique collecting, getting your feet wet in the industry can be fun and challenging. Furthermore, if you live in a more historic area of the country, you’re bound to be able to find more unique pieces with more value. If you’re new to antique hunting, there are a few tricks that can help you differentiate the real antiques from the reproductions:

Find a reputable dealer. One of the best ways to ensure you’re getting a genuine antique is to find a source with a solid reputation. Sometimes you want to find a great piece without worrying about being scammed by reproductions. A good antique dealer can help source items you like as well as show you proof of production.
• Know your stuff. Antique dealers hone their craft over years of practice, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a few tricks of the trade for yourself! Guidebooks, classes, internet research, and learning common symbols are just a few ways you can arm yourself when hunting for antiques.
• Don’t be afraid to challenge. Sometimes we become attached to an object before we even purchase it. If you’ve found something you like, but you aren’t sure of the production value, don’t be afraid to ask about the item in detail. There’s nothing wrong with wanting more information, especially if the piece has a high price tag.
